NewThis report provides research and extension results for trials conducted by the University of Georgia Vegetable Team and its collaborators in the 2024-2025 growing season. Pepper weevil is a key insect pest of peppers; in Georgia, overwintering monitoring of weevil populations has demonstrated that pepper weevil now overwinters throughout southern Georgia, including all of our primary pepper production areas. Contributing authors include county and regional faculty as well as specialists from UGA’s horticulture, plant pathology, crop and soil sciences, and entomology departments. All research has been supported by the Georgia Commodity Commission for Vegetables.

Bell Pepper Breeding for Phytophthora Resistance
NewA comprehensive research strategy was created in our vegetable breeding program to meet the needs of bell pepper growers. Identifying potential resistant gene sources against Phytophthora capsica is one of those efforts. This report provides research and extension results for trials conducted by the University of Georgia Vegetable Team and its collaborators in the 2024-2025 growing season. Fresh-market pepper production continues to grow as consumer demand increases for specialty peppers. However, selecting the best variety can be challenging because yield potential and fruit dimensions vary widely among jalapeño, serrano, poblano, and banana types. Various physiological disorders can affect the appearance and desirability of fresh market bell peppers; these often arise from environmental stresses and nutritional imbalances. Understanding these physiological issues is essential for growers to manage and mitigate them effectively. These disorders are common and are related to plant growth and development, not diseases. This circular shows these horticultural characteristics or traits that are expressed by certain genotypes.
